What has the Ateneo scholarship and education done to your personhood?

Most agree on several things:

l.  The scholarship was a very important break/opportunity to miss. Some accepted scholarhip at the urging of their relatives.  Eli did so at the urging of a rich uncle.  Jonathan went to Ateneo because he would be first one in their town to do so.

2.  Ateneo;s emphasis on reflection/discernment enabled many to make right decision. Critical thinking.

3.  Ateneo's emphasis on liberal arts and humanism distinguishes the Ateneo graduates from other graduates of tech schools/ other schools.

Ateneo Professor on Entrepreneurship

Yesterday, I had conversation with Tito Fabay, a bikemate who said before he conducted, together with martial arts training spiritual exercises.  These spiritual exercise were Bible studies.

And he mentioned that most Bible study sessions end up in debates and arguments, sometimes very heated with members of other religion.  He said that INCs had this tendencies but Seventh Day


Adventists were compliant with what the Bible says.

He brought several points:

l.  Many can speak well about the Bible, but to understand and live it is another matter.  (relevance)

2.  The biggest mistake that one can make is to call the other side wrong.  No one can be wrong   in his belief.  This reminds me of the a story while I was taking up MANACC.  The CPA told that somebody's proposed entry was wrong.  To which the Prof, Mallari said, what is your basis;   and then asked the Engr. whose proposed entry was labelled wrong to explain why he thinks his entry is correct.  To which the Professor said that you see, he is right too.

There is not one single option for a solution or decsion, or understanding of truth

For as long as your position is buttressed by facts that are accurate and relevant, then you are right.

The question is are you looking at the facts?  Are you an evidence based person?  Did you read the case well?  Did you understand the facts well?

Why am I posting this?

Is this relevant to entrepreneurship?

Are the SEntrep students very good, have enough practice on case analysis and critical thinking?

May I suggest that for those who think they are not very good at this (especially those who were absent or late for the case analysis) to try making comments on the US, Eurozone news.

An Ateneo Graduate School of Business Advantage

I think that watching the CJ impeachment trial, while is not the cup of tea for everyone, can practice you to think critically.  The way questions are raised, the Senate President makes rulings are great exercise in critical thinking.  How to be specific, how to focus on relevant issues,  etc.  Please bear in mind this thing as we watch the CJ impeachment proceedings.

At the end of the trial, you would have been used to proving.  And a business plan is proving a vision, o concept.

On Case Analysis and Case Method

Our generation needs an ENTREPRENEURIAL REVOLUTION.

There has been a lot of queries on their emailed case analysis and I could not answer all of them.  May I repeat my emails to some of them and my verbal comments and clarifications:

l.  Our standard is the case analysis we do in the class;   the multitude of facts must be sifted as their relevance, importance, urgency and direction  (trending is the trendy term).  Not all facts are created equal.  Nor can you compare them with the present.  You have to stick to the case.

2.  Please read the guidelines in the syllabus, and the critical thinking in Learning to Think portion of the Personal Mastery lecture at slideshare by the Prof.

3.  Follow either the GROW (Goal, Reality, Option, What to do) of the SPADA outline as you attack the case.:   Situation, Define the Problem, What are the Alternatives, Decision and Action.   Have an objective, a hypothesis.

4.  As you examine the situation, relate it to your problem solving skills ie, having a point of view, a framework to attack the case:   is it a marketing problem, finance, execution problem;  how do you relate it to the concepts that you know;  is it a conflict between vision and reality.  For example many see no problem in Victoria Court or Red Crab;  some do.  Why is it a problem?

5.  Ask the question why 5x as you read the case.

It is not about the case.  It is about developing critical thinking in you.  It is about living curious;  it is about the Harvardian way of thinking - to question everything.  It is about having a better thinking process.  The group work, group brainstorming should have helped you develop the case method of analysis.  Or the class sessions on case.

Developing Critical Thinking from Cases and Comments on Current Events

Our generation needs an ENTREPRENEURIAL REVOLUTION.

One of the graduation outcomes being developed among MBA, GSB graduates is critical thinking. That is why the faculty underwent a lot of workshops on case analysis,logic, analysis. That is why sometime is to be spent on case analysis - orals where grasp of relevant facts is very visible among the students. This can be supplemented by the students making comments on global news (specially) on how they impact micromarkets, macro markets, sales forecast and estimates. - (Opportunity Seeking)

Comments on articles and video on US events posted at this blog), Euro crisis, rice price hike in Thailand,commercial cropping etc is encouraged.

I hope before the term ends, these are forthcoming. Marc Guison and RBF made a lot of comments and helps me rate the critical thinking ability of the MBA students.

Blogs Are Looked Down in the Academe?!

Our generation needs an ENTREPRENEURIAL REVOLUTION.

Yesterday in the faculty meeting, I asked the opinion of my colleague on this undertaking and said blogs do not count; they are just journals and opinions are involved in trending and social thing. They do not count in the academe and is not considered a research or publication. (I could understand that - there are millions of bloggers but very limited number of professors) I was rather disappointed. I put in a lot of thoughts and effort in this blog to counted out by peers. There are some questions though:

l. Why is my blog being read abroad?
2. Why are the tweets accompanying the blogs via feedburner being retweeted or quoted by other entrep gurus abroad?
3. Why are other business experts following me on my tweets?
4. I thought that creative thinking, innovation, and critical thinking is encouraged in the academe? Arent there original thoughts and critical thinking in blogs?
5. What are tech tips and advice that work for others? If they work in real life then, since it is not in a journal form, it is not useful to the academe?

Perhaps, some education of the colleagues on blogs is necessary. They may not be up to date on social media. They are not up to date on self mastery. They are behind their students.
