Happy New Year

An Ateneo Graduate School of Business Advantage

Despite the troubles in the Year that was,

HAPPY NEW YEAR, A PROSPEROUS 2012

Atty. Vivian Dabu, former Entrep Student at AGSB Clark, a Remarkable Public Servant

An Ateneo Graduate School of Business Advantage

I am constrained to write a few words on Atty Vivian Dabu, a former student at AGSB Clark.  She could have been an outstanding ASG student and graduate.  When I first saw her, I thought she was an ordianry MBA student.  Later I learned that she was the trusted assistant of Fr. Emong Panilillo, the priest governor of Pampanga.  I learned more about her as she made her presentation and more when I got the embed code of her Grameen bank slideshare presentation. I was surprised on what I found out.

She has ll slides on various topics mostly ethics and government service.  It is good that I had 4 more than her.  Otherwise I would have been shamed.  (Some students shy away from this Slideshare assignment, which they do in Markma anyway and do not want to open a slideshare account).

Here is the link to her slides:

Congratulations Atty.  It was great honor to have been with your company for 8 4 hour session.

German Finance Minister is Confident that Eurozone will Stabilize in 2012

An Ateneo Graduate School of Business Advantage

German minister is confident Eurozone will stabilize in 2012!

These are words of hope in the season of Joy of Christmas.  Is is spoken out optimism probably knowing that the Euro and the debt instruments  and capital markets of the Europe and the world have been battered by:   ballooning debts and deficit, and unstable pronouncements from politicians.  Couple that with the lack of probable white knight in case of disaster;   who will help from Europe?   Germany, France, UK.  Look at the staggering debt of Italy alone:  $2+ trillion?  What about Greece and other shaky economies.Their bail out funds would hardly reach half trillion.  It is indeed worrisome

Will China help?

Will Japan and USA help?

Who will help Europe?

But we Christians are imbued with Hope.  We hope for a better 2012 in Europe

Building an Intelligent Singapore

An Ateneo Graduate School of Business Advantage

In 2006, Singapore planned to build an Intelligent City l0 years time by 2016 using the latest infocomm technology.  Today, Singapore is in the halfway mark.  IBM has such a capabiity to build such intelligent city, as advertised. Its vision is to build an intelligent planet, city by city.

ZD Net interviews CTO and other business leader to enlighten the reader on what Singapore is doing.

One such area is telemedicine, data centers.  Phil is lucky that many of professionals involved here here are Philippine expatriates. I actually got a business plan from a student who works in Singapore, and who did his MBA in the Philippines for telemedicine expansion in the Philippines

Very Low FDI for the PHL, High Savings Though

An Ateneo Graduate School of Business Advantage

FDI to the Philippines was an all time low.  It is less than a billion and some of them came from reinvested profits.  However, local savings went up.  Rich savers were better than poor people, savings rate of private was better than the government;  the non banks companies were better off than banks in saving money.,

It raises an important issue in entrepreneurship:  which comes first, frugality or the prosperous business.

It is my theory, that savings, frugality comes ahead of everything else.  There could be no financial or capital markets without savings.  Savings comes ahead of others.

What do you think?

What does the low FDI mean to local entrepreneurs?   Where would growth of PHL come from?  Who will invest in the PHL?

Here are the links to the article on savings

What Every Start Up Entrepreneurs can learn from Admiral Stockdale - Forbes

An Ateneo Graduate School of Business Advantage

Bike and Save the Earth

The article, which is from Forbes got my attention.  I am familirar with the Stockdale principle in Good to Great Jim Collins, which state that you must be realistic (not overly optimistic in your outlook) as disappointments can cause your failure.  I was just wondering how it applies to start up entrepreneurs.

However, as I read the article, it dawned to me as more of Sun Tzu or Dr Morato's treastise on Self Mastery.  "Knowing thyself, knowing thy enemies, One thousand battles, one thousand victories"

If you know your type as an entrepreneur, then the more likely you are to succeed.  Here is the link:

Cash Management for Start Ups

An Ateneo Graduate School of Business Advantage

I have a daughter who is into selling of beauty equipment on line. This November, her sales was almost a million. Not bad for a one woman show who does business on line, without ads and sales organization. All she got is a driver, internet connection, a cellphone, and the car of her sister.

However, when I asked her whether she got plenty of money, she said she still needs to borrow; she is cash short. I asked her why? She said she accepted pdc. What?

Some comments and observation:

l. Early in the ball game, if you are playing the price game, go for velocity of money, maybe low margin but mostly cash;

2. If you must accept pdc or credit: grant only to people you know, price the credit terms higher (to cover your risk) be sure your downpayment covers the COGS in case your buyer is a bad risk;

3. If you must grant credit; increase your credit lines; match your receivables with your payables; if you do not have credit; avoid credit terms.

I hope she gets wiser. Kids now do not accept advise from their parents; even if the latter has experience and knowledge

Are the Successful Entrepreneurs the only ones to be Counted?

An Ateneo Graduate School of Business Advantage

The recent MVP Bossing Awards to top Entrepreneurs may have the negative effect of disheartening the rest of l million or more MSME (micro, small, medium entreprises) in   PH.  Indeed.  But take note that most of those who were given the awards are all ready big.  They were small companies before that are now BIG.

I am inclined to believe that, as many have said, the real entrepreneurs are the ones who experience the following scenaario:   It is Friday afternoon, it is payday, your PDCs are falling due;    your receivables have not paid their bills and your bank balance is at the minimum.   How to do you solve/survive?

Thus would you not consider the micro, small and struggling entrepreneurs?   Are they of lesser category than the l3 awardees?   I dont think so.   Take note that entrepreneurs fail 3.8 times before they can land in the success category.  As they struggle, are they not entrepreneurs, as they try contributing something new to the economy and society.

Are Sidewalk Vendors Entrepreneurs or Public Nuisance? Boon or Bane?

An Ateneo Graduate School of Business Advantage

The current traffic jam may be partly caused by choking of thoroughfares because the pedestrians are spilling over the streets because of sidewalk vendors.  And complaints are increasing especially from motorists and pedestrians alike from this incomprehensible chaos.

Despite the tiangges flea markets and night markets, sidewalk vendors sprout like mushroom and magic everywhere especially before and during Christmas.  How do we handle them?

On one hand they are opportunity seizing and just want to make a decent living.  The govt. does not have to feed them or put them under its welfare.  On one hand, they are nuisance to public order?

What do you suggest?

I almost forgot Angelica Hizon of Pampanga's Best and Grace Santos.  Congratulations.  .  Congratulations to all and more power.

The plus side of this award is that this will inspire more upcoming and aspiring entrep wannabees.  But may discourage those who are faint at heart.

Thank you PLDT MVP for this wonderful project.

Again congratulations to the entrep bossing awardees.  May you inspire a lot more entrepreneurs.

Is the Facebook Threatened Shutdown by March l5th, 2012 a Joke or a Hoax or True?

An Ateneo Graduate School of Business Advantage

I just came across an article, 30 seconds ago, regarding the future of FB.  There was also news that FB was sued for $lBillion over a takedown of a 3rd Palestinian Infitada post vs. Israel.

Why did Mark get tired of managing FB?  Will somebody buy facebook?  Can somebody manage it for him?  This is typical entrepreneurship crisis?

It this threatened shutdown a hoax,? A joke?  Or true? What is his objective for making this announcement?   Is he testing something else.?

How is this going to affect you?  What will you do?

Every Generation/Nation Needs a Revolution? or Entrepreneurship?

An Ateneo Graduate School of Business Advantage

Thomas Jefferson espoused that every generation needs a Revolution.  We have seen various revolutions happen in the history:   French, Russian, the great China Cultural Revolution.  But history saw how revolutions displaced the lives of many people and even exacerbated the situation which the revolution sought to fight.  Tyrants are replaced by new batch of tyrants, corrupt leaders are replaced by new batch of corrupt officials.  We see how in France, the initial revolution leaders fell victim to  their instant execution.   We see in Egypt recently how the new leaders oppressed their fellow protesters.

Outcomes of revolution being explosive can not be directed or guided.  They are largely uncontrolled.

Thus boon afflictions by Goethe.

However, the other alternative, which I sought, after I abandoned being an activist in l970s, entrepreneurship create jobs, improve products and services, create more wealth, improve economy without destroying lives and property.  The outcomes are not sudden since the efforts are directed towards opportunities, and resources are wisely used.

Compared to government reforms and legislation, entrepreneurship, entrepreneuralism is a better option.?

What do you think:  revolution or entrepreneuralism is a better alternative?

In the US, Senior Citizens Work Hard to Pay the Bills

An Ateneo Graduate School of Business Advantage

It is a coincidence that we blogged Ateneo College 72 reunion yesterday.  They are all seniors now.  Somewhere in my blog, at the gadget sidebar. it was mentioned in the Latest From that  in 2008, the seniors started business at the rate of l00,000 a month, more than any age group.  Now, they are struggling to keep business afloat to pay for their bills. They have deferred retirement and travel.

Do not count out the oldies in entrepreneurship.  They are still capable.

Last Saturday, I learned in a wedding that one of my new kumpadres who thought he is retired (he is 64) started an energy company.  They sell device that will control escalators, one of the biggest energy wasters.  It consist of a controller that detects the presence of the escalator user (voice? or noise detectror, proximity sensor) that runs  the escalator when somebody is about to use.  No sound, the escalator is turned off.  That is innovative.

Do you think seniors still got what it takes to be entrepreneurs/entrepreneurial?   Can they still succeed?  Is entrepreneurship for the young at heart only?  Arent the oldies being forced to still work because of the crisis?  Is it good or bad?

Dept of Agriculture Sec Alcala Plans to have PH export Rice in 4 years.

An Ateneo Graduate School of Business Advantage

This is the kind of vision that we seldom see/hear from other cabinet Secretary.  Congratulations to Sec. Proceso Alcala who declared that Philippines would export rice to the region in 4 years time.  By 2013, Phil would be self sufficient, by 2014, there would be no more importation, and by 20l5, PH would export rice.

Phil imports up to more than million metric tons of rice every year.  This causes spikes in prices of rice in the region.  Alcala hopes to reduce the importation to only 500,000 metric tons in 2012.

But the country has still millions of land are still available for agriculture.  There is irrigation available.  In Mindanao and some parts of Visayas, there is seldom typhoon and it rains frequently (obviating need for irrigation) and the soil is fertile. There is also the high yielding rice variety, the SL5 by Henry Lim that yields 300 cavans/hectare.  Unfortunately, DA does not buy it.  HL sells the seeds to countries from where PH buys rice.  Politics, indifference, lack of vision, and concerted efforts are the stumbling blocks.  And with Sec Alcala declaring this vision, we wish him well.  (From PDI December l7, 2011 issue page A6)

Do you think Ph can achieve this goal?

Butterfly Release during Wedding Reception, Something New?

An Ateneo Graduate School of Business Advantage

I am posting this trivia just to remind people that entrepreneurship is creating or introducing something new.  Our wedding planners and/or the couples getting married are not resting thinking of new things to make wedding memorable and unique (differentiated and compelling - how unique can you get.  Now you know what USP means?)

At Ann's wedding, they had butterfly release ceremony.  I understand, each butterfly would set you back by P50.00@

An Ateneo Graduate School of Business Advantage

Ann Margaret Tolentino, a former entrep student at Regis Rockwell married her sweetheart of l0 years, Felicisimo "Jun" Saldana III at San Agustin Church in Intramuros, Manila.  Officiating the wedding was Fr. Erick Santos, a priest from Tondo known for his funny antics and sermons when on TV mass.

Some of the classmates of Ann were there:   Albert Alvarez and Evan.  I was a wedding sponsor.  The other sponsors there were big shots:   Mr. Cirilo Noel, CEO of SGV, Mr. Diosdado Santos, CFO of  Technolux group and Italianis group, Engr. Peter Paul Perote, a  manager at EEI, Dra Cristeta Tolentino, a CEO of a beauty firm company.

Reception took place at La Castellana at Cabildo cor Beaterio, about a block away from San Agustin church.  Ann must have carefully planned and spent lavishly for the wedding.  I understand she booked at the church a year ago;  she employed events planner, her bridal car was a vintage Jaguar;  she notified me to be a sponsor 6 months ago.  The food was first rate;  there was butterfly release event at the reception.  The wine flowed freely at the bar.  Music was provided by a string/jazz group from the church to the reception.  It was a unique and memorable wedding experience;   each detail carefully chosen and executed.

Eurozone Debt Concern is Worrisome

An Ateneo Graduate School of Business Advantage

Dark clouds loom ominously in Europe.  With the Greece debt problems still at hand, the concern is the Italian debt amounting to Euros 1.9 trillion or $2.5 trillion.  The European leaders agreed to lend to IMF $259.99 billion to help the struggling countries (roughly l0% only of Italian debt).  They have encouraged other non European countries to do the same.   Asian capital markets and that of US showed  rebound because of fewer job loss in the USA ever (since May 2008 only 366,000 -  that is still a lot!!) Other good news:   oil price went down to $95.00 per barrel (down from $l00.00+ last week)

However Fitch downgraded several American and European banks:  Bank of America Corp, BNP Paribas, Citigroup, Deutsche Bank AG and Goldman Sachs group.  Barclays and Credit Suisse went down from A to -AA.   Long term ratings of A were maintained on JPMorgan Chase and Co, Morgan Stanley, and UBS.  Societe Generale is A+

What do you think of these developments?   Are they worrisome?   What can be done to soften the impact of these development locally?

Best IT Jobs in the Philippines Now

An Ateneo Graduate School of Business Advantage

According to the latest news the best IT jobs are now in the Philippines.  There is no need for Filipino workers to become OFW.   Some jobs abroad may be  paying higher than in the Phil, but the higher cost of living offsets the difference.  This is quite a welcome development;  for the Ph  to be a job seeker's destination.

Several decades ago, we dreamt of creating more jobs in the Philippines so that our countrymen would not see anymore opportunities in some strange hostile foreign lands.  And that someday, some of the domestic helpers would be Caucasians (still far off)

Str Regis 3rd Session on December 13, 2011

An Ateneo Graduate School of Business Advantage

There were two things that we did:  we had new product presentation:  the concept and the prototype. and the unchartered business activities (read my lips:  illegal)

For the new product, Group l had Le Bon bread.  nutritious and whitening too.  Group 2 had chicken nuggets + hash brown in l.  Group l's name is a good name.  They just did not have a real prototype and specific costing for the BOM.

For the illegal activity, Group l  tackled padding in bids, with the connivance of suppliers and subcontractors.  Group 2 had anti govt group using fun runs for fund raising.

I lectured on opportunity seeking which should not be equated with chancing.

GDC must do some 5s for the AGSB facilities

An Ateneo Graduate School of Business Advantage?

Maybe GDC is too big that is why it can not pay attention to small things.  May this blog call their attention for regular housekeeping of the AGSB facilities in Sta Rosa:

What is wrong in the picture?

                                      What does not belong here?

                                 What is the action required (that is entrepeneurship!}

                                    Where are the vinyl tiles?

Is it a good image for the AGSB brand?
