Live Curious, Stay Healthy

Ateneo Professor on Entrepreneurship

... More on meeting with Tom Cooper.

Tom Cooper, a true entrepreneur just went on whirlwind travel tha t saw him at Australia, Bangkok, and now Manila.  He was up at 4 am yesterday and had several meetings during the day.  He met with MVP before me.  He said to maintain that kind of frenetic activity, you must have the physical stamina to handle the stress.

He has put up high tech new ventures at Silicon valley and exited many of them through IPO rich.  He also taught for several term in a Tokyo university teaching entrepreneurship (in English!) As we conversed, the more it seemed that we have many things in common.  He is 63, and I am 61.  He loves being fit (I bike hard).  His son loves baseball (I did like softball early on)  His son is an ex marine and a sharpshooter (he can shoot from l000 yards)  Ow I would like to meet his son.  He exudes such a strong passion for all things that are beautiful.

Some of the things that I learned from him:

l.  Live curious, stay healthy

Two golden rules for entrepreneurs.

Live curious.  (Discovery challenge or is it Nat Geo?) It is such a strong challenge for businessmen entrepreneurs to have open mind.  But the coastline changes each moment  a wave comes in and you must adjust the landscape.  What was modern can be obsolete tomorrow (Boon -->afflictions)

Stay healthy .  Stay away from drugs.  Exercise.  Healthy diet (except Marijuana.  There is medical marijuana.  It is used for pain therapy, especiallyin pain management of cancer ..

2.  The true entrepreneur makes,  distribute, and sell things.

He has classmates (and he met them during the ruby reunion) who worked with banks. One is with Mellon Bank, the other is with First Chicago.  Only the guy who works at First Chicago, understands that the guy who manufacture are the real entrepreneurs.  It is the guy who understands what the market wants, invents, modify, then makes the stuff, distribute and sells are the real entrepreneurs.

There are those who finance business ventures, VC, but that is it.  They can not be considered part of the technoentrepreneurship movement.

Some CEO simply administer a company and keep them afloat.  They maintain the system.  They lack the guts to bring the enterprise to the next level.

4.  Passion

Love what you do.  Love doing things for people.  New things.

5.  Value

The hospitality girl understands value, personal worth much more than anybody else.  We should emulate this in business - what is the value of the things we create for customers.

6.  Money

He looks like Bruce Willis to me

Is just a piece of paper, a medium by which you get things done.   Value is created when we solve problems for customers....

On Eurozone  -- its a big problem;  but entrepreneurs must just keep working at it

On US -  there is plenty of innovation going on except that US fiscal policy has been screwed up.  He would prefer president of US screwing ladies than those, but screws the country.

There are segments on the semicon that are slowing down but there are niches like smartphones and apps.  That is why his latest love is on apps - Proxiwoo.

He says that his ancestors used to own land where the US Trade Center used to stand.
