Money Mischief: Unemployment and Inflation - twin Economic Evils in USA

An Ateneo Graduate School of Business Advantage

This is rather alarming presentation on the current economy of USA.   The twin evil:  unemployment (which is higher than what the media reports:  it may be l7% not 8% as being reporte) and inflation,  and the case of gasoline prices, it is 34%.  And it says the misery index is the sum total of unemployment  and inflation. (That is high)

The debt level on the other hand, went up to unprecedented level.  The public debt durng the time of current President went up by $4.00 trillion in just two years.  The reporter anticipates a repeat of l970 during Carter's time, or the unemployment  rate is a repeat of the Great Depression.

The video mentions the Nobel Prize Winner Milton Friedman, an economist who together with President Reagan brought new day for Americans.  They fought inflation. They had Morning Again in America.

Milton Friedman is against all forms of inflation.  It is unjust taxation and robs people blind of their wealth.

Please take note that the source of this video and feed is conservative (Republicans?) and we should take its content from that point of view.

Do you agree with what they say in the video? What are the opportunities?  How can you apply Ji Wei? What can be the countermeasures if you are an American?

What does it mean to you if you have US dollars, deposits, or Treasuries, bonds?

The video markets the book of Milton Friedman and other investment newletter.  They give advice on countermeasures for inflationary The book is free for a limited time;  S & H is the only cost and there is free trial period

Morning Again in America?

Fwd: Flash Crash Threatens to Disrupt Markets in New Year

I just got a feed from moneynews does not paint a rosy picture for the all ready battered economy of the world's leading country.  It gives you a balanced outlook of the economic situation.  The idea is not to scare people but to make them prepared for the forthcoming further crisis if any., and to start looking for opportunities in the crisis:  (remember Ji-Wei?)

For every crisis, there is an opportunity.  For every dark clouds, there is a silver lining?

Late Factors Paper by Engr RG, STR Regis

FACTORS PAPER
To be a successful entrepreneur takes a lot of traits, skills, knowledge and information. I believe that an entrepreneur is either born or made. In both cases, there are gaps that need to be filled in order to be successful in business.
Some are lucky to be born with parents already as entrepreneurs and some are privileged because they have undergone trainings and studies to be ready in a business venture.
For me, an entrepreneur is driven by internal and external forces. Internal are the traits of being creative, self-motivated, a risk-taker, and undying pursuit for continuous improvement. External are the opportunities, resources and network of contacts/business relationship.
Although I already have my own business, I still find a lot of gaps that need to be filled to be able to grow and sustain what I have started. Being educated as an engineer and trained on both service and managerial aspects of an enterprise, I still need to improve a lot in terms of being more creative and pro-actively finding & seizing the opportunities.
In other words, being efficient in the operations and effective control of the business is not enough. That is where creativity and an eye for opportunities come in.
Below is a self-assessment tool taken from the internet:

Does this sound like you?
That is definitely not me.
Sometimes that's me.
That's me most of the time.
Wow! That's me exactly!
Nobody has to tell me to get to work. I figure out what has to be done and do it before I'm asked.
I like to be in control of whatever jobs I'm doing.
I'm rarely satisfied with the way things are. I want to change them, make them better.
I'm good with people. I enjoy creating teams of people to tackle a challenging task.
I rarely take no for an answer. I am known to be very persistent because I know I can't accomplish much on the first try. I just keep on trying.
If I'm told something is impossible to do, I often can't resist seeing if it's true. I don't mind failing if I learn something in the process.
Whatever job I have, I need to feel that I'm accomplishing something, not just putting in time.
More than anything else, I love to earn money. It gives me freedom and power.
When I'm working for someone else, I'm always thinking of how I'd change things if it were my business.
I'm willing to accept responsibility and take the heat if my decisions are wrong, but I want the credit (or rewards) when I make decisions that produce the right results.
When I'm doing work I really like, I don't mind working hard for long hours. In fact, it doesn't even seem like work.
I have dreams I want to pursue, and I won't be satisfied until I find out whether or not I can achieve them.
Is Entrepreneurship for Me?
Your score is 30.
You already share many key attributes of entrepreneurs. If you have not yet decided to become an entrepreneur, you should give it serious consideration.

This tool also shows that I have the tendency to become complacent. I need to find ways on how to be more creative so that I can continuously differentiate our business from the competitors.
Creativity and Continual Improvement are critical factors in growing and sustaining a business. That is why the Japanese car manufacturers have beaten the Fords and the GMs because of the American companies' complacency.
As for me, I consider myself to have acquired the external and most of the internal factors of a successful entrepreneur but have to focus on creating value and growing the business in order to survive in this highly competitive world.

Financial Meltdown Aftershock Survival Summit

An Ateneo Graduate School of Business Advantage

I just got a feed from Newsmax regarding a video inteview of a noted economist in the US.  This is a bit scary and paints a real picture of the financial status of US.  There is a staggering level of debt;  the balloon has burst for stock and housing market.  USA has been used for easy money.  Stock market prices (or even housing prices) does not keep pace with the real income of Americans.

There are advices on how to deal, and there is even a free book.  I hope it can help you appreciate the financial meltdown in USA, and be better prepared.

Do you agree with its analysis and recommendation?

Will it affect the PHL?

Please take note that there is transcript of the interview.

Health Is Wealth

Heart Attacks and Strokes are Preventable

Health is Wealth.  That is why my other blog is about biking.  I work very hard to stay healthy.

And I often say, what good is your accumulated assets if you are not healthy to enjoy it?

On the other hand, health care is a big business.

The number cause of death in US and in the Philippines is cardio vascular disease.  I recently saw a free video by Dr. Chaucey Crandall, who himself had a heart attack on how to prevent heart attack:

The two major causes in the US are:( In some countries and societies, there are no heart attacks?! Surprise?)

l.  High fat and sugar diet

2.  Inflammation.

We really have to be choosy and careful on what we eat.  Last Christmas, I ate just 4 pcs of lechon and 2 left over portions of roast beef (all very fatty), and the following day, I was dizzy and my bp was at l50/l00 ( my normal bp is ll0/70)

The cause of heart disease and degenerative diseases are the same.

This is how you can lessen heart attacks/stroke:

l.  Exercise

2.  Stop smoking

3.  Lessen fat and sugar intake. Have a healthy diet.

4.  Have your good and bad cholesterol measured.  Be watchful if you have pattern B bad cholesterol

Heart bypass is the last resort.  Stent and angioplasty are less tramautic

What Do You Think of Fireworks as a Business?

Just look at the aftermath of New Years Celebration last night!

The sun is reddish and almost covered by firecracker smoke

The townscape is hidden by smoke from firecrackers

Visibility at street level is about l00 meters?

An Ateneo Graduate School of Business Advantage

The last five days of 2011 saw the brisk sales of fireworks;  for the last two days of the year, municipalities set up pyrotechnics site/rows where the vendors could ply their trade.  In our place, most of the vendors are Moslem traders, and most of the fireworks are made in Bulacan.

These must be a huge business.  There are actually imports from China and I know that Dragon Fireworks for example employs modern techniques in manufacturing and  wide network of marketers in their business. The owner was a guest entrepreneur in the class.  (We actually bought hundreds of thousand pesos worth of fireworks for our Memorial Park Nov. l event/celebration)

I wonder whether the fireworks regulation is strictly enforced by authorities.  Considering the injuries and other health hazards coming from fireworks:   watusi poisoning, pollution , possible lung diseases, is fireworks a sound sustainable business?   Is it for the good of all?   Is it beneficial for everyone concerned - goes the Rotarian questioning?

What do you think?

                                    Fireworks trash dump

                             Firecracker exploded wrapper litter

                             More firecracker wrapper litter

The fireworks row, and the trash left by Vendors

The signage for designaed fire and pyrotechnic device selling area

There were dozens of firecracker/technics device vendors here yesterday, they did not clean up

It was hazy and visibility was poor this morning; throat becomes itchy
