The Narrow Path by Dan Kennedy - a book on entrepreneurs

Diverse portfolio or focus on few things that count?  The Zurich axiom tells us that you should put your eggs in few baskets.  If you put many eggs in many baskets, you spread out your risk, yes but your returns are spread out thinly as well.

Focus on the things that count.  That is what narrow path is all about.  Focus and concentration of your efforts that are of real value

Issue # 212 - July 30, 2013
Hi Jorge,

When it comes to everyday business decisions, it is easy to get sucked into trying to do several things at once as opposed to just doing a few projects until they are completed before moving on to the next project.

Even I am guilty of trying to do too much at once. It is an easy trap to fall into because you think that many simultaneous projects will result in more money when in actuality, you are only doing each of them at a fraction of what you're capable of. As a result, you miss out on the revenue you could've made by spending all of your valuable working on a few things to the best of your ability.

In today's Main Essay, multi-millionaire entrepreneur and business strategist Dan Kennedy will share his thoughts on this issue that continually pops up in businesses across the world.

In the Check It Out section, you will find out about 3 fatal mistakes that can cause your business to crash and burn faster than a controlled demolition. Click here for more details.

We hope you enjoy this issue of the Thriving Business Newsletter.

The Narrow Path
By Dan Kennedy

Government does not work because it is more about royalty remain ing royalty than it is about results, so the only time it gets anything of real importance accomplished is in moments of
severe crisis, when all the royals are equally threatened. Business works – when it works – because of an opposite operating system.

Small business works better than big business, because its leaders have little fear of
being deposed; they are the owners, a status actually higher than royals (which is why royals despise business owners), so they can act without political considerations. For that reason,
they are often proactive instead of only reactive. Because they deal in real rather than fictitious numbers, have a limit on debt they can get their hands on, and eat profit, they often make
intelligent and rational decisions.

Many work at defusing problems at their tiniest, in their infancy, rather than postponing
doing so as long as possible, until the monster has grown big enough to eat them. If you
stand back and observe all this, you can see what works and what doesn't work quite clearly,
and make your personal behavioral and business practices choices accordingly. If you will.

Felix Dennis is a Renegade Millionaire – actually worth about $500-million, which he manufactured for himself, entirely on his own, from scratch. He is one of Britain's richest citizens. In his newest book, The Narrow Road, he tells more blunt truth about what works in the making of money, more succinctly than any other credible person I've ever read on the subject. I am more simpatico with his conclusions than I am with anyone else's.

Like me but more so, Dennis is offensive to many and frightening to many more. Truth is rarely pleasing or reassuring, except to the very tiny number of people who prefer it to being pleased or reassured. I suggest getting and reading this little book, but in a well-lit room, not in gloom inhabited by scary shadows.

Unlike most authors of most success genre content, he makes no attempt to deliver ideas that will be popular with a large audience. This mirrors my own approach as an author, spanning, now 32 years and more than 20 published books. (www.NoBSBooks.com), My scariest is No B.S. Ruthless Management of People and Profits.

One very big difference between the path most are on versus The Renegade Millionaire Way is mixed agendas vs. laser-focused dedication to what works. The Renegade Millionaire Way is simple: find what works and use it. (That's what being part of a great mastermind group is all about. Why coaching is important.)

Others way is far more complicated. It is cluttered with: what will people think of me? am I permitted to do this? but we've never done it this way. we should get more consensus. my peers are all rushing off to do the new thing and I don't want to be left behind. will this make me popular? liked? or gossiped about? what if it sparks criticism about me on Google?

Ordinary business owners are trying to run fast through a dense forest of all these concerns, thus bumping into trees at every turn, spending a lot of time lost and confused. Renegade Millionaires have left that forest and are running on a clear, paved path.

DAN S. KENNEDY is a serial, multi-millionaire entrepreneur; highly paid and sought after marketing and business strategist; advisor to countless first-generation, from-scratch multi-millionaire and 7-figure income entrepreneurs and professionals; and, in his personal practice, one of the very highest paid direct-response copywriters in America. As a speaker, he has delivered over 2,000 compensated presentations, appearing repeatedly on programs with the likes of Donald Trump, Gene Simmons (KISS), Debbi Fields (Mrs. Fields Cookies), and many other celebrity entrepreneurs, for former U.S. Presidents and other world leaders, and other leading business speakers like Zig Ziglar, Brian Tracy and Tom Hopkins, often addressing audiences of 1,000 to 10,000 and up. His popular books have been favorably recognized by Forbes, Business Week, Inc. and Entrepreneur Magazine. His NO B.S. MARKETING LETTER, one of the business newsletters published for Members of Glazer-Kennedy Insider's Circle, is the largest paid subscription newsletter in its genre in the world.

  April 8 - April 14, 2013

Here are the top 10 things you MUST know this week:
1. If You Want To Have Better Search Rankings, You Better Improve Your Site's Bounce Rate ASAP

Most if not all of you have horror stories about how your business or another business has been affected by Google's constant algorithmic changes. We hate to be the bearer of bad news, but recently Google has added a lot more weight and credibility to a site's bounce rate, or the percentage of visits that go only one page before exiting a site. In the article above, Digital Marketer contributor Travis Harper talks more about bounce rates and mentions some things you can do to improve your site's bounce rate.

2. Google Chrome Experiment Turns Your Favorite Website Into Smartphone-Controlled 3D Maze

Would you believe it if we told you that Google has created yet another innovation? This particular innovation involves turning webpages into smartphone-controlled 3D mazes. What is the name of this innovation, you ask? The name of it is the World Wide Maze. In order to play the game, you simply install Google Chrome on both your computer and your smartphone. Once your phone and computer are paired together, all you need to do is enter a special URL, select your website gameboard of choice, and start playing. This goes to show yet again that you may not like Google, but you have to respect the incredible innovations their coming up with.

3. Businesses, Particularly Startups, Need To Adapt To Customer Buying Dynamics

Most of you probably think that if you adapt to new technologies, like smartphones and Internet commerce, you will attract an array of new customers. What you may not also be thinking about, however, is that consumer-buying habits are always changing, too. The continuous growth of social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest proves that buying dynamics are much more than adapting to new technologies. It is about the "user experience." So what can you do to adapt? In the article above, Huffington Post contributor Marty Zwilling shares with you some things that can help you understand the thought process of today's consumers so that you can make more money at your business.

4. 3 Common Mistakes You Should Avoid When Branding

If you have ever started a business, or been involved in the creation of one, you know how important it is to brand. It is a name, logo, slogan, and/or design scheme that is associated with your products and services and if done improperly, could fail before it is ever given a chance. So the question is "What do I do in order to avoid common brand mistakes?" The answer is in the article above from Entrepreneur contributing writer Alanna Francis. In the article, she talks about the common pitfalls many brands succumb to and what you can do to avoid those mistakes.

5. Author And Marketing Guru Seth Godin Shares Three Essential Skills Every Great Entrepreneur Needs

If you're an entrepreneur, you don't have much of a life. You spend countless hours on your business and whatever you can do to make it grow. You are always looking for new business opportunities, making phone calls, replying to emails, and so on. You know you're a hard worker, but you need other skills as well to help you succeed. In the article above, Author and Marketing Guru Seth Godin mentions three other skills every great entrepreneur needs to have.

6. 4 Tips On How You Can Hire Great People For Your Business

Is it getting to be that time where you need to hire more employees so you can generate more profits and grow as a business? In the article above, Inc. contributing writer Les McKeown gives you a 4-step-process you can use to hire great people each and every time you need to.

7. 10 Extraordinary Things You Should Say To People Everyday

Do you want to make a big difference in the life of your friends, family, colleagues, employees, and anyone else you care about? In the article above, Inc. contributing writer Jeff Haden gives you 10 things you should say to people every single day that will not only make a huge difference in their life, but yours as well.

8. Case Study: What Does A Real 4-Hour Workweek Look Like…With A Family?

Most if not all of you probably spend too much time working on stuff for your business and not enough time with family and friends. This typically happens because of an obsession to make a lot of money as quickly as possible. What if I told you there is a way to make a lot of money without having to work a lot of hours each week? In the article above, Brandon Pearce shares with you his weekly schedule and how much time he spent on each task. It is really amazing to see how someone with three kids is able to work very little in a week and still generate upwards of over $25,000 in a month.

9. McDonald's Adds New Sandwich That They Hope Will Take On Subway

A little over a couple of weeks ago, McDonald's officially added a new sandwich called the "Chicken McWrap." Ad Age reports that this sandwich is an effort by McDonald's to take on Subway. Only time will tell whether the sandwich will be a success or not, but you've got to respect McDonald's for trying what seems to be an effort to take on a rival competitor.

10. Jennifer Adams Goes From Helping Her Mom Make Furniture For Their Small Oregon Home To Owning A $12 Million Design Empire

As she was growing up in a small Oregon home with her mother, Jennifer Adams knew all too well what it was like to be poor. Alongside her mom, they used two-by-fours, foam pads and inexpensive fabric -- this chocolate brown velvety stuff -- and used hammers, nails and staples to put a sofa together. They also put together a coffee table and shelves using boards and cinder blocks. Despite all of the hardships, Adams was able to pay her way through design school. She then got her first project at the age of 23, charging $300 to design an entire house. After Adams started raking in the referrals, she was charging $1 million per project by the time she hit 31. That's pretty incredible for someone who was helping their mom build furniture for their home only a few years before. Today, Adams owns her own award-winning interior design firm. Called the Jennifer Adams Home, her empire was to have a 2012 projected revenue of $12 million. The question you may be asking yourself is "What's the point of all this?" The point is that great things can come out of hard times and if you continue to strive for a better life, you will eventually get it.

Hi Jorge,

Do you have days where it seems like you can't get anything done? Maybe you have too many tasks to complete or you feel tired and sluggish. If so, you are not alone.

Your health and fitness can have a dramatic impact on your business. It not only affects your productivity, but can also affect your overall mood and life.

I've learned this from first-hand experience too.  I had my gallbladder removed when I was just 35 years old because of my poor eating and exercise habits.  And I used to feel tired all the time too.  When I started focusing on eating better and exercising, I felt better almost immediately.

In today's Main Essay, fitness expert Scott Tousigant talks about a healthy way to increase your productivity that will have a positive impact on your business.

In the Check It Out section, you will learn about the 3 fatal mistakes that can cause your business to crash and burn faster than a controlled demolition.  You will also learn how to avoid those fatal mistakes altogether, and instead, create a business that thrives.

We hope you enjoy this issue of the Thriving Business Newsletter.

Cheers,

A Healthy Way To Increase Productivity
By Scott Tousigant

I'm Denise and Jynell's friend and fellow product marketer Scott Tousignant. This week I am enjoying my role as guest author here at Thriving Business and introducing you to the positive impact that home office fitness will have on your business.

Many corporations have been adopting workplace fitness as a means of increasing productivity with their employees. Today, I am going to explore the topic of productivity in more detail and help you get more of it during your workday.

So, how many hours a day do you spend working on your business? How many of those hours are spent being productive?

It's important to work hard and pay your dues in order to get your business turning a profit. But spending 12-16 hours sitting in front of your computer may not be the most useful way to spend your time. You may be busy, but you are not being completely productive.

Have you ever found yourself staring at the computer screen for an hour trying to get something done? Sure you have.

In reality, you only have approximately three peak productivity hours in your day. If you are really focused and have been working on your productivity, you may be able to squeeze out four very productive hours throughout your workday.

It's important to know what hours of the day you are most productive and capitalize on them. I am most productive during the hours of 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. (Noon). Any other time during the day I can become very easily distracted.

Many of my friends work a lot better during the evening hours when their kids are sleeping. All I can think about is quality cuddle time with my wife Angie during those hours… and maybe a bit of tweeting here and there.

The point is to work on active tasks during your peak productive hours and then do the passive activities after, during your less than productive hours.

I have a secret weapon when it comes to increasing my productivity. It's short bursts of fast, fun home office fitness. Instead of only having three to four peak productivity hours throughout my day, I can easily create an additional hour where I'm super-focused and highly productive.

I strategically time my home office workouts for the times during my day when I'm feeling less productive, such as first thing in the morning when I'd rather just sit in the rocker and drink some coffee and around noon when I begin to experience a bit of a lull and feel like taking a nap. Lack of time is nothing but an excuse when it comes to avoiding exercise.

So, why is home office fitness so great for boosting your productivity?

Your brain is actually being nourished by the BDNF protein which is created when you are physically active. At the same time as your brain is being fed, your body is eliminating stress chemicals that can have a harmful effect on your body and productivity.

This is largely due to the increase in oxygen flow to the brain.

When you exercise you are creating an environment within your brain that is ideal for problem-solving, time management, increased focus, and greater levels of creativity. And get this… Exercise can actually help create new brain cells. I think we can all use a few more of those.

Exercise is the best thing that you can do to help your brain operate at its absolute best. If you are serious about your business you can't continue to put off exercise any longer. Do not ignore the positive impact that it will have on your business and life.

The above benefits are the reasons why I exercise regularly and eat well. My focus isn't to lose weight even when I need to drop a few pounds or gain muscle. Those are both secondary benefits that do happen.

This makes sticking to a fitness program for the long term so much easier. It's one of the advantages that you have over someone who is following a fitness program just to lose weight.

You're not exercising just to improve your health… you're exercising to build your business and boost profits. That's so much more motivating!

And here's the good news.

In only 10 minutes a day, with very little space and very little equipment, you can maximize your time, while making your body more efficient at burning fat.  Click here and I'll show you how I do it.

SCOTT TOUSIGNANT and his wife, Angie Tousignant, have been helping busy men and women, just like you, transform their body and life for over a decade. This dynamic duo prides themselves on providing a balanced and practical approach that will motivate and inspire you to become the best YOU that you can be. Scott and Angie have dedicated themselves to sharing their exact workouts, what they eat, and how they stay motivated to continue transforming their body's and life.

Your Thriving Business Assignment

In order to improve your productivity, consider the following:

1.  Work on active tasks during your peak productive hours and then do the passive activities after, during your less than productive hours.

2.  Consider short bursts of fast, fun workouts throughout your day. Instead of only having three to four peak productivity hours throughout my day, you can easily create an additional hour where you're super-focused and highly productive.

3.  Strategically time your home office workouts for the times during my day when you're feeling less productive.

Hi Jorge,

Jynell and I are at a conference through Sunday learning about some super-cool ways to advertise your business for free.  We'll be sharing the best stuff with you in upcoming newsletters.

In the meantime, I wanted to ask you a quick question:

Do you have all the sales and profits that you desire?

If you're like most people, you probably find yourself constantly working to exhaustion trying to reach a higher income level...and trying to figure out why you just don't have all the sales that you were hoping for.

Here's why you don't have all the sales you want.

I wrote this to explain how any business can explode their sales.  At the end, I give you details about how you can start implementing these techniques for yourself today.

Check it out.

Well, I better get back to the conference.  Break is almost over.  More later.

Cheers,

She described it as "looking at blackness in a crack" and that she "lost her independence." Despite all of the obstacles that come with being blind, that didn't stop Elman from starting her own business, Alex Elman Wines, in 2010. Now 44 years old, Elman has 4 employees and her business had a 2012 projected revenue of more than $1 million. This goes to show that no matter what obstacles are put in front of you, you can be successful if you refuse to give up and move forward.
