Creating, communicating, and acceleration of communication of values

An entrepreneur has three major tasks (if he is to succeed)

         1.  Discovering, conceptualization of value that he can offer the public or prospects
              coming from:

               1.  What pisses off the customers
               2.  New needs and wants in the marketplace
               3. Competitive initiatives
              4.  New technologies;   new values

      2.  He has to communicate this to the prospects via:

              1.  Traditional sales channel  (sales people and outlets)
              2.   Traditional communication channel:   leaflets brochures,

    3.   Accelerate this communication process via:

                1.  Traditional media  -  newspapers, billboards, TV
                2.  Non traditional media    events, social media

The social media:  SEO Google ads, the use of webinars, ebooks has become passe.

Facebook has become the dominant platform.    If you do not use FB, your marketing
              efforts could be slowed down.

Facts:      1.  many newsprints have closed shop even the veritable Time and Life, and even PDI
                              in Philippines

                           2.  Billboards now that rents out at P200,000  a month could have have gone over the
the top.  Myriam took pity on them 5 years back by having them banned.   You could
barely see and or understand their pitch at 100 kph and even more so when it rains

                          3.  TV ads which cost P700,000 to P1,000,000 every 30 seconds are zapped by the
                               remote TV controlller in households

Ads are now seen more on You Tube and other videos reflecting the shift in
the importance of mobile devices and /or FB ads in #3, ie accelerating the spread
                             of communication

Some say FB ads dont work.  They dont if:

                           1. You cant target well your prospects/

                          2. You cant write a good copy

An entrepreneur must understand this process, this development first hand, and must know how to do it himself, otherwise,. he may spend tons of money which he can ill afford.  As entrepreneur, he must make paraan and avoid the pitfalls.   This series will focus on landing pages, lead generation, what to avoid, how to do this right..

As an entrepreneur/businessman would you resort to illegal and immoral means to meet your objectives

Ateneo Professor on Entrepreneurship

Rizal Philippines
October 5, 2019

In my discussion with a former subordinate now a multi millionaire in real estate, certain controversial topics came up:

     1. Maglalagay ka ba sa govt agencies approving your permits to expedite processing.
He is uncomfortable with this.   But let us analyze reality:

My uncle who was a Usec at an agency approving the conversion advised me not to.  At that time
conversion was only P10/sm.   I applied for conversion in 1983, and got it in 1988 walang lagay.
Otherwise I would have spent P800,000 for that done in 90 days.

A colleague in the academe told me, as he engaged in condo development in QC told me that he has
to come across in QC for the Certificate of Occupancy otherwise he does not get utility connection
and his investment will lay idle.

Many officials are enterprising, and can think of various ways  of making money by making processing
of permits harder and longer despite a law vs such pernicious practices.  Better said than done.. este
      gazetted....

  2.  Are you willing to hurt your business rivals, to the extent of eliminating them or other obstacles...?

Someone said that you cant be a govt executive unless you have hit men and has the  guts to eliminate
       detractors.

  3.  Are you willing to give CIA to govt officials in charge of procurement up to 50% KB just to get
the business or contract, or even to be a stooge, they use your permits, etc and get only 5% on the
       gross?

4.  Are you willing to use weighing scales that are report wrong weights so that you can sell less for more?

5.  Will you resort to tax evasion/ avoidance so that you will get richer faster?

6.  Will you adulterate your products, using lesser quality components  to sell at same price or say inject
     water into your dressed chicken.

7. Will you and other fellow businessman go on price fixing in a certain locality (agree on a price)  rather than compete in a free market?

How many of us do business on honest to goodness basis.   Being truthful and honest all the times....

The entrepreneur is someone who spent time envisioning his product and his/her strategy revolves around the product/customer.   His/her passion revolves around that.  And the entrepreneur share this passion with his/her partners and staff.  The entrepreneur should be able to talk about his product service to hours at end.

If you cant do this, you are not probably an entrepreneur...

This Doctor Partner is an entrepreneur par excellence

Ateneo Professor on Entrepreneurship

The city hall site was donated by their family
                         to the city

I had a business trip with a partner for a real estate project and because of the long wait and the long conversation, I got to know more of the business sense of our JV partner in a real estate project.  We met for more than a decade with each meeting not lasting for more than an hour over breakfast at the Ortigas CBD.

These are his business ideas, some of which he has implemented.

1.  ATM machine in his home town.  He partnered with his classmate who owns a network and is duly licensed by BSP and funded by World Bank.  He services the employees of Decs and other government agencies.  The normal fee is Php 12/transaction plus a convenience fee of P40 to 60 which is justified since the travel to and from the city costs twice that much.  He has hefty income from this lone ATM machine (the machine is Diebold)   He has standby Genset to give power to the ATM machine

2.   Water refilling station.  It was born out of his desire to provide medicines for his parents.  It costs him P36,000  a month to provide meds for his parents.   Now he has a water refilling station which nets him P50,000 a month and on top of that he provides jobs to 3 staff.

3.  Investment in a memorial park

4.  Investment in two pharmas whose revenues run into hundreds of millions:   one a suture company, and the other provides staining agent for Cat Scan machine

Other interest:

5.   An oxygen generator which replaces the oxygen tanks now being used in hospitals.  His effort to launch this was thwarted by crooks at DOH   Oxygen concentrator generator

Inogen One G2 Oxygen Concentrator

6.   A cold storage plant for his kababayan.  His city is a vegetable basket of the island province.  He plans to partner with a cooperative so that the producers do not have rotten produce or fall prey to traders.

7.  A hospital and lying in center in the city

8.  Commercial complex

9.  Dormitories for students studying in the city from nearby towns

And then:

We are going to develop a memorial park in his city on a site adjacent to the municipal cemetery which he got only for x millions.  He will get 9x from his investment should the project become successful

Proposed site for hospital lying in

Property at the back of the church for
                            ossuary and or memorial chapel

Proposed site for memorial park
Flat rolling and good feng shui

Power is available at the site

At the back of the municipal cemetery
we will have apartments (body crypts)
We will provide one hectare for 5 year
                              rental only for P6,000

The municipal cemetery is filled up

Typical of the cemetery:  full and
                            helter skelter arrangement

My business partner walking down the
access road to the site;  about 150 meters
                      from the highway

The family cemetery at the mun
                       cemetery

Properties of Tito for subdivision

That is the plateau over there

                      Tito owns 800 hectares but were carped;
                      this one is 73 x 530 meters

Access road is near Caltex gas
                           station

                             Mostly planted to sugar cane

Abandoned 20 hectare project with
a major MM developer who lived luxuriously

                            Beautiful houses abound but
what you read in Lamudi is about
raw land between 100 to 300 php
                            per square meter

If we can sell at P3t per square meter
Tito B would be richer by P100 m
but that is a long shot

The veggie basket of the island province
Since the place is conducive for growing                           veggies, the price of cabbage is only P10 php per                   kg.  It is like being in Baguio.   Water is plenty
and cost of agri production is cheap. It has                             something to do with food security

                    Vegetable basket of Negros

DA to transform Canlaon into salad bowl of Visayas

Venues
There is a need for venues

I would like to have a cluster in San Carlos City:   thus San Carlos (Toledo Cebu) and Bacolod Canlaon

Solar energy

                                    A 320 watts (vs 250 now available
                                    2 meters x 1 meter panel

                             Cafe in Dumaguete airport powered
by solar.  The solar expert is a pilot
airplane mechanic and ex US navy
                              diver.

Start up entrepreneurs have to improve self to the next level to scale up business

Ateneo Professor on Entrepreneurship

Repost from QZ com by Jim Alampi | November 12, 2013

One of the biggest challenge to start up entrepreneurs is scaling up the business.  This is most especially true in the PHL but is not in any way unique challenge.  In US,  of the 6 million start ups, only 25% achieve sales of more than $l million a year.  (It may be less in the PHL)

The bottleneck is of course at the head - the founder. The traits that made the start up rise up -  quick decision, deciding on limited information, flexibility, risk taker etc. may be detrimental to the growth of the company.  A growing company must be more efficient, need a new set of skills, and may even require a new set of team members.  The founders, pioneers may even be obsolete for the new firm, even the entrepreneur, himself and even look for a new CEO.

The problem usually though is with personal mastery and growth of the man on top.

Only one in four entrepreneurs see the light.  See the rest of the article:

Startup embraces many concepts at once, looking for winners
A New York-based company called Betaworks is using an innovative business model that focuses on testing many different product ideas at once and keeping only those that show promise. "We try to fail fast and small," said John Borthwick, the company's founder and CEO. One of the company's most recent successes is an iPhone game called "Dots" that has already attracted millions of users. Betaworks also diversifies its holdings by buying and revamping established brands and by investing in other startups. CNN (5/30)

You don't need to be an extrovert to start a business
If you aren't naturally extroverted, the constant networking and meetings that come with life as an entrepreneur can be draining. Try to team up with someone who is more outgoing and focus on building deep connections rather than trying to meet as many people as possible, according to Susan Cain, author of "Quiet."
