Investment grade status for PHL not felt by man on the street

Ateneo Professor on Entrepreneurship

From GMA News by Marc Jason Cayabyab | March 28, 2013

The Philippine capital market is ecstatic over the news that rating agencies have upgraded PHL rating to a notch below investment grade Bb+ This is something to be happy about since this is the first time it happened to former sick man of Asia, and couple that with 7.1% Q4 GDP growth, one of the highest in ASEAN.  This means easier access to credit and ease of borrowing for the country.

However the news report of Marc culled from the ordinary man, as expected means nothing.  Perhaps the effect will trickle down several years down the road.

On the optimistic side, upside, investors will now look at PHL with more trust and confidence.  And PHL is better off than say Cyprus, Spain, Italy or even USA

What do you think?

Rejoice

Are product liability lawsuits anti entreprenueurs?

Ateneo Professor on Entrepreneurship

From Point of Law.com | 2012

I just watched at the Fox news about a interview with lawyer about product liability lawsuits and how they discourage business in USA.  The most recent was Blitz USA which had to close shop, and lay off 117 employees.  Blitz makes gas container tanks and there had been numerous accidents involving fires from the gasoline container (they build fires from gasoline poured from the gasoline container; which is is a no-no.  Naturally fires jump into the container and cause explosions.)

The sympathetic juries awarded millions of dollars to the litigants, and naturally Blitz went belly up.

Thus when Sandy struck, the supermarkets ran out of gas tanks because Blitz had been closed.  Now consumers have to use Igloo or milk containers to get their gasoline.. which is a more dangerous method.

At the time of closing, Blitz had 42 cases pending before it. (From Fox news)

It was remarked by the host that it is no wonder that Lyme disease vaccines and HIV vaccines are not produced because of the litiginous nature of the US consumers/legal system.

Are these litigation cost being passed on to consumers (Fox News says it is about $1,000 per every consumers and lawyers have a field day)

Do you agree?

Or manufacturers have to be conscious of safety and their liability (and torts?)

Is this driving away manufacturers away offshore because of this?

Reaction Paper - Food Trip by J Villamor

Reaction Paper: FOOD TRIP
Juan Villamor, MBAH Section 10B
The food establishments we visited last Saturday represented, in my mind, very good examples of entrepreneurial vision. Their respective business models, though not particularly unique, are still distinctly viable and well executed. They studied the market well enough to be able to define the gastronomic preferences of their potential target market, and packaged their products and services to precisely appeal to their clientele. The proprietors of both Banana Leaf and Sugar House also picked very good locations for their businesses, ensuring a steady stream of loyal customers that enjoy their dishes.
I particularly enjoyed the experience of eating at Banana Leaf. While I'm not exactly an Asian food junkie, the choices are varied enough to give me plenty to choose from. The members of the service staff are quite knowledgeable about the food and helped explain what is on the menu. The dishes are also well prepared and tasted good. The spices and uniquely Asian ingredients added a delicious texture to the dishes we ordered, and did not depart radically from Filipino food that made the first-time treat so much more enjoyable. The unique touches, like the banana leaf and the Asian costume of the waiters, added to the pleasurable experience. The fact that the choices are affordable rounds off the experience of eating at Banana Leaf as a very interesting culinary adventure for a food junkie like me. Overall, I would give this establishment a grade of 4.5 on a scale of 5.
I am not a sweet tooth, but I still found the desserts at Sugar House delectable and worth all the calories in the cake and the coffee. The menu offers a wide selection of sweets, and each goes well with the beverage choices. While the desserts are quite affordable, I also noticed that the eating area is quite cramped and some of the furniture did not mix and match. The members of the service staff are just a notch less than professional (e.g., not quick enough to respond to requests, requires follow up to address your needs, among others), but are very courteous and helpful nonetheless. Sugar House gets a 3.5 in my 5-point scale for this particular food trip.  <answer to innovation, differentiation, uniqueness?>

Playing to Win - Book on Strategy by Roger Lafley fmr P and G CEO and Martin

Ateneo Professor on Entrepreneurship

From Good Reads

I just saw Roger Lafley at the Fox News interview on his boo "Playing to Win -How Strategy Really Works a  new book on strategy.  It is written by Lafley and Martin of Rotman School of Management.  Lafley is the iconic boss of P & G, the consumer goods company of Cincinatti who was responsible for quadrupling profit, increasing  market value of P & G stock by $100 billion, doubling sales in just ten years.

His secret of course - how did he do it is via a strategy -  a choice of key activities and resources to achieve an objective.

He has five questions:

*What are our aspirations (objectives/goals)
* Where will we play?
* What are our capabilities (what do we have? - resources)
*  How shall we play (choice of activities)
*  What are management systems required to support our game?

It is surprising how success formula or strategy can be that simple

Significance of the Date today, March 16, 1521 to PHL history

Ateneo Professor on Entrepreneurship

Angono, Rizal   | PHL  March 16, 1521

What is the significance of the day today, March 16, 1521 to PHL history?

492 years ago, today, Ferdinand Magellan "discovered" the islands he found for Spain and named this Philippines in honor of King Philip II of Spain.  He landed off Homonhon (part of Samar)   on ships Trinidad, Concepcion, and Victoria

Yoyoy Villame popularized this date in his song, which can be sent to your friends as a ringtone

However, thee is a debate as to where the first mass was celebrated on Easter Sunday:  Limasawa in Cebu or Mazzau island off Butuan City in Mindanao?  I have been to Butuan City and saw this marker that says Magellan actually said the first mass at this place.

The secret to managing multiple locations
Jared Ross, who launched Veda Takeout in 2005, has planned for expansion since the beginning. He performed market research and developed a limited menu of Indian-inspired cuisine with a healthy twist. To promote consistency, food is prepared at one location and is distributed to the other three each morning. Ross' business has grown to include 40 employees, and he is now considering a move into franchising. The Globe and Mail (Toronto) (tiered subscription model) (3/8)
