Living out the business experience vs pontificating, lecturing
Looking forward to the future of business
This post has taught in a GSB in the 4 walls of the academe but always wanting to be extraterritorial. We went to restos, to sites of businesses owned by the students, we went on experimentation to give reality to what we were talking about in the classroom. We asked students to come with illegal business ideas, we asked for business plans. Not so much of lectures or academe (but which the succeeding dean killed ending my teaching career)
It was going back to textbook reading, chapter by chapter and answering review questions. Life was never made that way. And having departmental tests: select the best answer. True or false
My post here are not lectures but real experiences as we navigate negotiation and formulation of business ideas. In real world. Not from textbook

Rubbing elbows with the rich and famous - in laws of Kings
Professor on Entrepreneurship
Rizal Philippines
October 6, 2019
When he was still alive (he died about 3 weeks ago), our Chinese business partner told me that one of his in laws was a motel magnate. And he was wondering in what way I was connected with the company. I told him that the motel of his in law was a favorite case. And I love it the way it distracts straight thinking from the students in case analysis and discussion. Some even mentioned that it was the result of one of the owners veering towards being a devout Christian. But businessmen will be businessmen no matter what the religious inclination is. Some are disciples of the Church but when it comes to money, when it comes to business, business is business.... My name pala sticks out in the search engine for Victoria court because of blog posts made on the company/case
A way to remove tension and formality in the class, and what conclusion do people have about the case.
The case goes like this: the owner was re positioning the motel as a medium priced hotel and having thematic room. The conclusion is that the top execs were not successful in the re positioning adventure, but they were successful in changing the price points of the industry.
The said motel exec owner died in a helicopter crash near Cuenca (Mt. Maculot) mentioning that he is a billionaire (as a result of this case exercise?)

Inalis na ang pangalan ng school sa site title at Post
Professor on Entrepreneurship
Wala man lang goodbye.
Isinagguni ko sa dating dean na nagrecruit sa akin kung i reretain ko ang pangalan ng school sa soc media account ko. Sabi niya makakabuti na alisin ko. Bagamat ito ay maaaring nakakatulong sa search sa school

Teaching entrepreneurship at a GSB - a recollection
Ateneo Professor on Entrepreneurship
Rizal Philippines
July 21, 2019
I taught entrepreneurship at famous GSB for more than a decade after I finished my Strama for the MBA for the same school. And taught the same subject all over the country: Makati, Cebu, Clark, Subic, Sta Rosa.
I have stopped teaching the subject for the last 3 years because of 1. Traffic, 2. Old age (retireable na daw pag 65) and 3. because of the new boss. He was unyielding that the grades will be submitted sooner, which is not possible if one of your requirements is writing a full blown complete business plan.- a graduation skill that the students of the said GSB lack.
I am sure that my cluster head could have defended this position... A bp is just as challenging as writing a strama, even more so since you start from zero
I made sure that the 8 (Regis) or 15 weeks (standard) course I offered was both exciting and demanding. The course featured:
1. Use of electronic means for learning even without the blackboard. The assignments and the submission
of assignments was via the blogs. It made the students more competitive and web savvy
2. Shared book reports. 1/2 of the time of the class was spent on presentation and panel discussion
of book relevant to entrepreneurship and business
3. Group activities:
1. Creative work at the class: food preparation and making sales pitch
2. Micromarket study: PDQ
4. Individual
1. Serendipity walk - finding as many opportunities in streets that could be desolate or overcrowded
to practice mastery of opportunties
2. New 12 - listing down new ideas weekly Paramihan Practicing creativity
3. A self awarenesss, self tribute video
3. Writing a full blown business plan: Objectives Organization, Executive Summary, The customer, the product, Strategy, FS, Complying with regulations
Walang quizzes or exams. Only learning and hard work...I am sure they learned more and the course became very memorable to them. Some feedback says that its the only time they felt they were in MBA class
I remember that on several occasions, several class activities became a campus event:
1. Inviting Dra. Belo to make a presentation on making people beautiful
2. Francis Kong
3. Social entrepreneurship forum on the 40th year celebration of the GSB
4. 3d printing for creativity...

Observations/analysis of a strama defense on a FMCG multinational business unit
Ateneo Professor on Entrepreneurship

I was surprised that I was invited again to sit at a panel of strama defense. For unknown reasons, I was never invited for almost a year. Well, some of male professors have been notorious for being critical and strict with many defenders. And for right reasons: we want to ensure: the quality of the GSB, and we want the student to proudly carry the title "Master" The school has been branded as diploma mill for GSB.
Today I am back to my element. While I gave passing grade to the student these are my observations:
1. He discussed a business unit, a multinational engaged in FMCG distribution and marketing, which in reality does not have degrees of freedom to implement the strategies. I thought the paper was on a SBU? He did not even mention the legal entity of the local business unit? or the business model. He mentioned such limitations as:
1. Carrot and stick system of reducing AP because of flat, declining sales
2. The marching orders are from the regional head/office;
3. He blames the corporate stock outs for this problem, and I told that for a year or two that could have been corrected; something external is amiss?
I thought that only strategic business units are subject of strama.?
2. The student had audicious goal of achieving x number of billions of sales as his vision/goal for the next several years, yet:
1. He could not clearly explain why the sales was flat. He blames corporate woes including lack of correct execution; but that would not sufficiently explain the flat sales
2, He portrays the competition to be medium from several quarters and yet the sales does not keep up with growth of the economy and other external factors. He failed to mention such developments as: cheap substitutes, other product substitutes for feminine hygiene, and other developments in health care. His mindset has been strictly pharma: there are many alternative medicine that it may be eating into the market share. (I informed him that I write on this topic Cheapcures) He and his company may not be seeing reality and these changes.
3. Consistency in the paper:
1. Growth opportunities/large markets were presented as beauty care, OTC, and yet were not present in the EFE, and thus in the strategy. Thus his plan revolves on the products that they have sold before etc., same old story, me too strategy.
2. For the IFE he prides the company on high engagement of the people, good culture, and yet states that the internal strategic issue has been that of correct execution which are rather inconsistent.
I hope the professor in charge has the paper corrected and rewritten.
What has that strama paper achieved for the business and economy? Not much I guess:
1. Since this is not an sbu, what the regional office has dictated will be followed;
2. Since the opportunities were not properly addressed, the x billion additional sales will find difficulty in the achievement. The competitive pressures are not like wise addressed as well as increasing cost of sales channel.
3. For the internal strategic issues, ie that there is a need to address cooperation and coordination (and the student prides in saying that they have strong adherence to corporate culture) and which is not addressed strongly, the problem will persist, execution will be a problem.
4. Nothing new was presented except incremental improvements (I was hoping I will be surprised amazed).
At the end of the day, we passed a student who knows how to use strategic tool, but who did not create something new, nor made a dent in the universe.
He did not rock the boat
Am I a panelist or terrorist?

Why am I posting a public school event in a site for Ateneo graduate school?
Ateneo Professor on Entrepreneurship
Angono, Rizal PHL | July 21 2013
Why am I posting RHS class 68 at the post supposedly only for Ateneo instruction at the GSB?
Well, I think it is relevant so that students will understand that I came from a public school and I was molded that way.
The education we got along the way makes us what we are now. The concern for our country is both shared in Rizal High School and the Ateneo Graduate School of Business which mentions this forcefully that "Our Nation is our Business"
RHS through the words of Ms. Javier, mentions this tepidly: "Our economy lies in your hands"

I read the news today -NEDA exhorts business and academe to create jobs
Ateneo Professor on Entrepreneurship
Ever since I taught entrepreneurship at the Ateneo GSB, one of the objectives was job creation, in line with the catch phrase of Ateneo -"Our nation is our business"
And today I just read the news that NEDA wants to create more jobs. This is a good direction rather than Pres Obamas goal to support workers being laid off with unemployment benefits.
I hope this spreads; no one can save us from the economic contagion that is in Europe and US; the Taiwanese rift can affect us too.
But above all we must be self dependent; Filipinos have taken the lead in investing in our own economy. Despite lack of FDI you can see construction boom all around us.

Innovative teaching methodology
Ateneo Professor on Entrepreneurship
I taught Entrepreneurship for more than a decade in a leading university and Graduate School of Business in Manila PHL. I am a business entrepreneur - that is my day job. And I had no training as an educator. That could be a weakness or a strength.
As a weakness I tried to make up for it by making my classes interesting by innovating and using methodologies that are uncommon. Some of them:
l. I updated my syllabus every semester
2. It may make me look like lazy but much of the learning is student centered. Individuals and group make the presentations in class; my lectures are at slideshare for easy access by everyone.
3. My syllabus are online.
4. I encouraged my students to upload their work at you tube and slideshare (familiarization with social media)
5. I had them submit their assignments online at my blogsites.
6. Many activities relate to real live business situation: observations of business, food trips, etc.
7. To practice creativity:
l. We asked students to create new products, menus
2. Submit new ideas weekly
And many more.
This slideshare shares with us the new trend in education and many are not responding to this. Until 3 years ago, I was not a netizen. I forced myself to learn and even have blogs.
