Pricing your services as a consultant, or business plan preparation
Ateneo Professor on Entrepreneurship
Rizal Philippines
October 5, 2019
I am shocked by the prices being charged by fellow lecturers for their services.
I do not ask for a price because I have my own business from which I derive income. I would get about P5k to P10k for a whole day of lecture and presentation. For BP I charge P50,000 on staggered basis.
Cheap hindi ba. May mga kaibigan akong doctor, na nagtatanong ng advice pa dinner nga lang. And then pag nagpatingin ka may charge... How unfair yata. Or I should charge the correct value for my knowledge and expertise...
My former subordinate charge P100,000 for out of MM speaking engagement. There was a BP for a memorial park na ang charge ay P200,000 for a bank loan, and even then the loan was not granted.
How much should be the fair amount to be charged.?... Or huwag na lang tumanggap ng engagement?

My exciting stint as Lecturer on Entrepreneurship at this AGSB
Ateneo Professor on Entrepreneurship
Rizal Philippines
September 29, 2019
I have stopped teaching for the last 2 years and the only two subjects that I taught were Entrepreneurship. I had 3 classes on leadership and the head of HR cluster, Hilda taught that I would be useful in that subject being a practicing business leader. I think I was successful in teaching that too.
The batch under Alran think we were one of the best and the school prided itself as one of the best GSB in the Philippines and the world. The Dean sent me and several others to Korea and Thailand together with US universities to hone our knives on entrepreneurship subject
I remember that in conducting this class we had some unique practices:
1. There were 3 invitations to entrepreneurs which became a campus activity: Vicky Belo, the presentation on 3d printing, Francis Kong and sevral others One portion of the subject, the last session was learning form the masters. We had aside from those mentioned Jajo Quintos fmr Pres of IBM, the head of Splash, and many more. Even George Weineke who became a professor though he is not Masteral Graduate was discovered in such a presentation
We even did a Social Entrep convocation in an AGSB celebration. This was a class activity project, and we did not get sponsor just snacks. The Chair Col. Rosauro Sibal encouraged us to get out of the box.
2. Serendipity walk (copied from ACE guys)
3. Teaching materials at Slideshare
4. Using blog for assignments, syllabus submission, and forum. Using digital medium for teaching although I did not have access to Blackboard. Done on my own initiative
5. Self development projects: like self tributes and videos expounding advertising oneself. I asked students to post this on You Tube
6...Creative projects in the classroom by groups and to practice sales pitch
7. Plant, hospital, clinic visits owned by students;
8... Book reports at the class on unique topic. Now billionaires and moguls encourage 1 book per week
reading. Warren Buffet encourages a more severe routine one book a day.
We had interesting books like Michael Gerber on E myth, the Millionaire Next Door by Danko, Pirates
of the Silicon Valley, Edward de Bono, on Lateral Thinking. and many ore We had great learning experience at the class. Pretty Exciting.
9. Prayer before and after class; Practicing reflection as we do in the faculty conference We even had Jamie Rivera singing "Sino Ako" at MBAH on Saturday invited by Dra. Lagman...
.10. Writing business plan. I think this is a basic graduation skills and I required individual business plans. Writing a business plan takes time and research. and puts together the marketing, HR, operational, financial skills learned by the student. The new Dean, wanted grades at the end of the term. With this conflicting modes of teaching idea, the author had no recourse not to teach anymore. What is entrep course if the student finishes the course without knowing how a business plan is written.
I even had a vision linking my class on Agricultural Entrepreneurship with CLSU and Philrice, and examining more the potential of SL -8 for food security, after visiting the school with a group of Chinese businessmen.
I got several invitations from contests sponsored by MIT on business writing and we could have
anyone in the school participate because no one was paying to business plan...
I was proud of being a staff of AGSB and having done this for the school and the PTM the students who will be future business leader here and abroad. I think it was Entrep class like no other
Do you agree that this was an exciting stint?

Healthy options as new businesses
Ateneo Professor on Entrepreneurship
Rizal Philippines | April 30, 2013
In the consultation with Sentrep students for BP, two students proposed healthy options: one was going to import and resell virgin olive and organic olive oil; the other one would put up healthy restaurant. When I asked the student on healthy restaurant and asked him on: water, cookwares and other details of healthy living, he said he had nosebleed.
One thing came out though, that both would need an organic farm as a partner.
It happened that we had a classmate (also now a senior) who has an organic farm in Jalajala Rizal
Organic squash
A dragon fruit farm
The problem of the lady owner are: lack of sufficient water supply, very intensive (and therefore expensive operations)
The water supply can be solved by having solar power; the expense level can be solved by having market/buyers connected her. She needs to pound more on the MVP of her farm: that it is healthy option and therefore is more expensive than those farms that use pesticides and fertilizers

Did you write a business plan for your business Arch Bong?
Ateneo Professor on Entrepreneurship
Anton Pantoja asked our guest entrepreneur if he wrote a business plan? Arch Bong curtly answered no. He said it is common sense: you know whether you will make money or not.
I hope Anton is not making reference to the course requirement of 30 points why you need to make a business plan.
That is why:
l. I have been pounding on the business model (and we even had the BMI special report by Bel Tamayo) It is a thumbnail of the business (that is why the financial: revenue vs cost side) has to be SMART!.
2. There is the effectutation entrepreneurship special report by no less than Anton. These guys, the hundreds of thousands micro entrepreneurs there did not write a business plan. Look. They remain micro.
When you borrow money, when you want to expand, when you meet VC, you need a BP.
If you must graduate with an MBA, you must know how to make a business plan.

Our Last Session for Sta Rosa Entrep Class
The AGSB Advantage
We had the make up class (last session) for the Regis Entrep class last night Feb l7, 2012. It should have been held last Jan. 3l but I had to leave for the REE conference in Bangkok Thailand; somebody (Bonna and Gerry?) were abroad; no one wanted the session on Feb. 14, 2012 because this a heart holiday. Then. it was set at l6th and had to be reset at l7th because some have strama class.
So we finally did it.
What did we do:
l. I showed them my latest Slideshare on creativity, tools for creativity, effectuation, new bp formats, and applied strategy on how they could possibly be benefitted.
2. Special Reports: Blue Ocean strategy by Bonna. Financial Statements by Mai.
3. Entrepreneurs talk: Luciano A. Tejano of Gatepacific Circuits c/o Bonna and Ms. Teresita Batac, a service provider franchisee for CII c/o Norman.
Then we had the graduation song of Ateneo and then the closure talks/comments from everyone:
Some comments
"The entrep subject was not a first choice; but eventually they began to like it;
It should be ac core subject.
Many teaching methods are unconventional (unique, innovative)
NU 6 makes them aware in their everyday lives, especially for those who travel abroad;
The case analysis is quite different from other case analysis by other facilitators
On business plans
Mr. Tejano, who hails from South Cotabato (Polomolok, we have a memorial park there) said he has a collection of business plans which he prepared assiduously to sharpen his skills and acumen. When he distributed his business cards, the class said he should give away business plan instead.
To which he said, he is thinking how much he should he should charge.
Then finally, we had dinner at Industry. Unfortunately, Mark, Armando and I had to leave early (l030); I still had to pick up a daughter who was coming home for the week end from her dorm in Buendia Makati.

Notes on the Business Plan Submission and Grading System
An Ateneo Graduate School of Business Advantage
TO : Entrepreneurship Students at Lipa and Sta Rosa
As a guide to students who will be embarking on business plan writing, please take note of the following reiteration of guidelines:
l. Due date: It is 45 calendar days after the end of the semester. It can be submitted thru Richard Victoria and Vanessa who in turn will forward the same to Rockwell. Be sure that your BP is properly date stamped. Any BP submitted later will get a grade of 2.00 as the highest, and those who can not submit will grade a final grade of INC. As per registrar's ruling, that becomes an F, 30 days after INC grade is submitted.
2. Medium - hard copy minimum of 40 pages.
3. Grading system:
l00 pts total
Business Concept and Model - l0 pts.
VMOKRAPI (business objectives) l0 pts
Product (Concept, Design, Positioning, PTM Competitive Analysis, Alpha, Beta testing) - l0 pts.
Sales estimate (from micromarket analysis, macromarket analysis, competitive assessment, historical
performance - 20 pts.
EDS (detailed input, throughput, output, spell out everything: raw mat, raw mat procurement, quality procedures and control, job description, hr policies) marketing, PDQ, in relation to business objectives outcome - 20 pts.
FS (the threee financial statements must be there: cash flow, p n l and balance sheet) - 20 pts
Compliance with regulations: local, national especially environmental rules: solid waste management, pollution, air quality etc. - 5 pts.
Exit strategy (should be both positive and negative) what do you do when successful (ipo, sales to third parties, gift to children) donation to foundation, etc) or when it fails (what are the red flags, how do you recover assets, what is plan b) -5 pts. A two liner wont do.
4. Please read Moratos book, the syllabus, and the pages of the profjorgeentrep blog regarding the same topic: business plan writing.
It is ok if we complied with the submission of the topic, outline and drafts during the term so that the same can be critiqued and corrected.
We can have group consultation if need be prior to the deadline. I am still your professor.
Please master this skill well because it costs P200,000 to P300,000 to have a business plan from a consultant.
Please be properly guided
Please do not introduce strama format into the bp writing. Please follow the format prescribed here. The BP follows the cases and discussion outline in the course and it should reflect your full understanding of the entrep subject.

Results of Business Plan Writing Competition
I am pleased to inform the results of Business Plan submission as final requirements for the Entrepreneurship subject.
l. For both the MM and standard program 4 have not submitted: 2 for each class.
2. Many of the weaknesses were on completeness. The most common areas where on Market Estimate (Opportunity Seeking, Screening and Seizing. Not very many supported this part with numbers to arrive at a cogent sales estimate. Many did not include some needed parts in the BP, as business model, FS, and EDS
Others simply put the outline. I reminded time and time again not to put just the outline. Most treated the last part lightly: the exit, adding, multiplying the business etc, conformance to the regulations. These are important.
3. I had to request one to follow the prescribed format; I had to request another one to rewrite because what was submitted lacked substance.
4. The best bp for standard was submitted by JB Borromeo; for MM Atty Elbert Cruz, Wylene Pacres & Co, Lester Sablay,Yash Lumbao and Annlyn Nalangan all did well. (None got a 4 though.) None qualified for the business plan writing competition.
I suggest that you get your BP back and learn from it as you prepare for your strama.
Every generation needs a revolution - an ENTREPRENEURIAL REVOLUTION.

Another Entrep Class Tomorrow
I had been advised that I will handle a new batch of Entrep Students tomorrow, July l8. They will be Middle Managers MBA students. Incidentally, the deadline for BP of both standard and Middle Manager students is tomorrow. I hope that they will submit outstanding business plan. I have an ongoing entrep class at Clark, and the last session is on Wednesday, July 2l.
For the new entrep class I will do the following:
l. I will inject the international mindset in teaching entrepreneurship or talk about international business as well.
2. Mention the l0 graduation outcome as discussed in the faculty conference.
3. Use the internet/social media in the conduct of the class:
l. Minimize use of paper in submission of assignments. Submit assignments via blog and post at the grade with the post.
2. Posting at pages the house rules and most of the syllabus.
3. Continue class discussion by having students post comments on controversial items.
4. Post the special report at slideshare.(a website)
In doing this, I will really be making entrep class truly 2lst century entrepreneurship

1. Making a business plan is proving (just like proving an equation, algaebric or geometric. You are proving that your concept is doable
and viable. For existing entrepreneurs and who have established successful business, it is about retracing and writing how you became
successful.
2 It is the distillation a culmination of all the learning,: cases, theoretical group work, individual work and entrep visit.
For example:
Product: group creative activity, on product design and prototyping, pdq exercise, mico
Market estimate: micromaket exercise, opportunity seeking and screening
Business organization: personal mastery, pranav, jose lontoc

New Product Ideas by Clark Agsb Students
We only have l0 entrep students at Clark AGSB. But we have been getting high quality assignments, discussions and presentations from them. What we lack in quantity, we have quality.
We were at the portion of creative group activities: design and protyping. The products were: new concept in giving business opportunities for reseller of meat products; gummy gel candies and cookies for a certain medicinal herb. And the last one was potato chips in rich chocolate coating.
Wow, I will get fat and have diabetes listening observing these product presentations.
I believe entrep course should focus more on this acttvity: creating products and designing it. When you have a product idea and prototype, the next steps and creating business plan would seem easier.
How I wish they would push through with their plans
The future of business would be in the design and creativity.. Business skills are needed yes, but we lack creating new products.
