There are three masteries needed by entrepreneurs: personal, of the environment and of the enterprise. The most important and the most critical of all is personal mastery.
Even Peter Senge in his book The Fifth Discipline, mentions self mastery as one of the disciplines.
John Gokongwei a noted Filipino billionaire, tycoon and entrepreneur mentions that in the beginning, you strive to be an entrepreneur because of the necessity - to survive. But in the later stages, the goal of the entrepreneur is to be HIMSELF; in other words, self mastery.
Dr Ed Morato, an entrepreneurship guru of MBE, emphasized this in a panel interview with one of the entrepreneur candidates that he cant make a decent business plan unless he has personal mastery ie that he works hard and be disciplined to get his data first hand for the environmental assessment. No lectures, readings will make him in unless he changes and improves.
