From the Inquirer today. The elite Philippine Universities did not make to top 300 universities in 20ll in the London based QS (Quacquarelli Symonds).
UP is still the top Philippine University, but slipped to 332nd, from 3l4th in 20l0; Ateneo is 360th, falling down from 307th last year; DLSU fared even worse from 45lth to 500th list to 55lth-600th. UST is out of the top 600.
The universities are rated on the following:
academic reputation -40%
faculty citations - 20%
faculty student ratio - 20%
employee reputation - l0%
number of international students -5%
number of international faculty -5%
Questions have been raised on these criteria but is nevertheless used as a basis for ranking universities.
The top 5 world wide are: Cambridge, Harvard, MIT, Yale and Oxford (The UK schools are the top schools? Where else) Top Asian schools from Japan, HongKong, Singapore, Taiwan, South Korea and Taiwan are among the top 50.
Some educators and experts in the Philippines seem to correlate this with reduced budget for state run colleges and universities.
Congratulations to UP for being the number l U in the Philippines. Ateneo, where I teach (at the AGSB) is perhaps chastened by this report and a lot of chest beating and reflection is perhaps in the offing. It is my observation, that even myself need a lot of self improvement. After just looking at Slideshare and visiting the teaching aids of Ecorner of Stanford University, I know that I and probably the rest of my colleagues at the GSB need a lot of catching up to do.
