Some Latest Business News - How will they Affect Local Entrepreneurs, You?

Our generation needs an ENTREPRENEURIAL REVOLUTION.

There are three  business news that I got that seemed to be relevant to Phil. entrepreneurs and business:

l.  PAL will slash flights to ll destinations (and cut jobs naturally) as part of its effort to cut costs, losses and effort to turn around.

2.Two companies, Pepsi Cola and Coco Vita, are going to invest in Philippine coco industry in BJ (buko juice ) as reported by the President from his trip form USA.  BJ is popular as a wellness and health drink.

3.  Rice price is going to be unstable because of the recent policy in Thailand to increase buying price of rice from farmers (from l0,000 to l5,000 baht per ton.) Thailand supplies most of the rice to rice eating countries that include the Philippines.  Rice price is expected to rise from $400+ per ton to almost $600.00

Questions:   What are the opportunities?  What business can you think of?

  1. That's great news. Investing in Philippine coconut industry will not only give jobs to our farmers but will also boost our economy. Coconut have many uses. The coco coir can be converted into fiber nets or handicrafts which could also be exported. Coco coir can also be used as fiber reinforcements and is useful for construction industry. Coco shells can be converted into charcoal briquettes as alternative energy. Coco meat or copra can be used to produce cooking oil or biodiesel. Today, coconut oil and coco biodiesel are still expensive but increasing the number of coconut trees from 300M to 1 billion will increase supply of these products which will be beneficial to the consumers as prices of these products can go down. Production of coco juice products will also provide more jobs for our locals.

  2. Ms RBF, are there initiatives from your agency now regarding this new opportunity? What will PCA do about planting of additional coconut trees? As of now, bukos price is Pl5.00@ that is from P8.00 one year ago.

Shall we just allow the big beverage company to exploit this opportunity?

  3. As far as our agency is concerned sir, we have the technologies for all the above that I mentioned. We can also provide trainings and consultancy services and transfer the technologies to companies that would want to invest. What we really lack are investors. But if anyone is interested they can always approach us anytime.

As for the buko juice, way back 5 years ago one of our research institutes assisted an SME on the product development of bottled and canned buko juice. We provided the technical assistance on plant layout, GMP and other production concerns. If I am not mistaken the brand is Lipa Fresh Buko and I think they are already exporting.

Unfortunately, I cannot speak for PCA sir as they are under a different agency and I am not familiar with their programs and priorities. However, on my opinion, I think they should review the pricing of coconut because from what I heard, the giant traders only benefit from the high prices of coconut and not the farmers.
