Ernie Sarangaya, a graduate of San Beda and who hails from Manila (also educational entertainer master magician, puppeteer and illusionist), and our travel guide to PUR rattled off interesting facts on Palawan.

- that is the largest province in the Phil with land area of l.7 million hectares;

- that Puerto Princesa is the largest city in the PHL with nearly 253,982 hectares;
   Davao ranks second with only 243,000 hectares after Tagum became city.

 -northern portion is much older possibly about 200 million years old, the south is younger say 3 million years old;  the north has gray limestone;   the south  has whiter calciferous limestone.

-  The north and south landmass joined in what is now Puerto Princesa'

-  The languange is Tuyunin;

-  There is a vanishing tribe of Batacs who are about 300-400.  One reason is they intermarry with Tigbanuas who are much bigger.  The males are allowed to marry up to 3 and when girl is only 12 years old resulting in high mortality rate.

-  The cradle of civilization is in Palawan.  Dr. Robert Fox discovered the Tabon Man in Quezn, Tabon cave who is possibly 40,000 years old.

-  The name Palawan came from the Spanish word paragua, meaning shaped like an umbrella. Or Chinese word Pa la lao you.-  meaning "beautiful safe harbor"

-  After the fall of Saigon to Viet Cong, a number of Vietnamese escaped, and landed in Ulugan Bay, Palawan,without food and hungry.  They ate their clothes. for food.  They lived in Palawan.  Some were repatriated, some were assimilated in US and some intermarried with Palawenos and now reside here.   They started local delicacy of Chao Long.

-  The mayor of PP, is a German who used to be logging and gambling lord.  When he became a public official, he stopped gambling and logging and vowed to preserve environment.  He is accredited for developing tourism in PP.

- The PUR was again given an award yesterday.
