Changing Opportunities for a Territory

Our generation needs an ENTREPRENEURIAL REVOLUTION.

I happened to visit a famous Southeast Asian tourist destination during the week, after some 20 years.  At that time of my visit, their stock market took a beating because of the malaise in Greece, Italy and the rest of  Europe.

It is a prosperous territory and their residents enjoy one of the highest per capita income in the region, (with one of the highest standard of living yes it is expensive and costly to live there).  It is interesting to note that they have been very progressive inspite of the following:

l.  They have no natural resources to speak of;  no rice plantation, or before they grew lychees;  they do not have marine life/fisheries to talk of because of water pollution by fisherman's villages;  all their foodstuff is imported;

2.  Their land area is mountainous and thus have difficulty in accommodating building for its residents; they have to import domestics and other workers from abroad too.

3.  Their only sources of livelihood are tourism, port services, financial services.  They have well developed airports, seaports and container terminals.

4.  In 2003, they were plagued by an epidemic scarce that annihilated one of its important industries - tourism.

5.  Many of its housing units and factories are vacant, for sale or for rent because most of the manufacturing has moved to neighboring low cost neighbors.

6.  Many of the buildings, hotels, are old; their attractions are under competitive pressure from other tourist tiger countries.  Other countries are coming up with better and more attractive tourist destinations.  I would venture to say, that except for shopping for name brands, discounted items, there is not much to see. Other island nearby have great attractions and have direct flights and this  islands modern airport has to compete for visitors.

Questions:

'l. What will this territory do to stay competitive?

2.  As a businessman here in the Philippines, do you see an opportnity?

3.  What is your prediction regarding the economic future of this territory?
