Factors Paper: Angelo Paolo Lino

ENTREPRENEURSHIP
Prof. Jorge Saguinsin

What is an Entrepreneur? An Entrepreneur according to Merriam-Webster dictionary; one who organizes, manages, and assumes the risk of a business or enterprise.
I'm currently working for a family business which is an Electronics company which exists since 1991. But on the side I have my own business and I can classify myself as an Entrepreneur.

It started like two years ago when I decided to put up my own business which is a commercial building and a dormitory for students. I thought of it because right beside my building is a university and on the other side is a techno park where big companies settle.

There are a lot of qualities of an Entrepreneur that you can search on the internet. I have found some of these and I think I possess most of these qualities.

First, they say that an Entrepreneur must have Discipline. He or she must be focused on making the business successful, must have goals and strategies on how to make those goals achievable.

When the construction of my building finally started, suddenly doubts in my head started to come up. Will this investment be worth it or it will be too much and it might not be that profitable?  Should I go invest my money to other things which is lesser in capital but might give me a bigger or almost at par with the commercial building? With those questions posted you might think that I gave up on my business, NOT! What I did instead is to set my goal that whatever it takes this building will find tenants who will rent. With that goal I set my strategies.  One of my many strategies is to put up a simple tarpaulin inside the school and gates of Techno Park that soon a commercial building and dorm will be open and we are accepting reservations for those who are interested to rent. Though simple, but it paid off.

Second, an Entrepreneur should be Confident on whatever decisions and actions they will be making and the knowledge that they will make their business succeed.

Knowing that there is a university and a techno park right beside my commercial building, I know and I' am confident that this business will boom and make profit. I' am also confident with the strategies I made to make sure that my investment would not be put into waste.

Third, an Entrepreneur should have an Open Mind and should realize that every event and situation is a business opportunity.

They say that the only constant in this world is "change". There are lots of changes or problems I encountered with this business. A competitor right in front of me suddenly gave a better rent price for his tenants. Instead of me thinking it as a problem, I consider it as an opportunity, to make my building or service better. The solution, instead of lowering my price, I gave an additional perks such as free cleaning for their unit once a month.

Fourth, an Entrepreneur should not wait for somebody to tell him or her to do this or do that. Everything should start in him.
Fifth, an Entrepreneur should be Competitive.

I' am very much competitive. Knowing that there are lots of competitions around me, I see to it that I always win! But I make sure that when I win I don't put my competitors down or out of business because it is unethical to do that. I make sure it is a healthy completion between me and others.

Everyone knows that an Entrepreneur should be Creative, sixth quality.

Thinking that there are lots of competitions, how can I make my business better or much attractive to clients? Creativity is the answer! I can give better offers or deals, I can make my building colorful, and I can make something different that other competitors don't have.

Everyone falls. It's up to that person if he or she will rise up again. That's what you call Determination, the seventh quality of an Entrepreneur.

I had my downfalls but it never made me quit. There are some businesses I made that didn't prosper. But even if that's the case, it didn't stop me in looking for another one.

Last but not the least the most important trait of an Entrepreneur, Passion. This will show how a person loves his work. Passion in a sense that a person will give extra time, extra commitment on the business he started, to make sure that it will prosper.

After office I visit the site. Checking on my tenants if there are problems, if there are things to be modified, if the clients are well taken care of, i9f the place is clean and hassle free. Etc. etc.

To sum it up, a person doesn't need to have large amount of money to start a business and be called an Entrepreneur. You just need to have a dream and passion, with that you need to have strategies or objectives so that you can achieve those dreams.4
