AGSB Faculty Conference in Canyon Cove, Nasugbu Batangas, 20ll

The 20ll Agsb faculty conference was held in Canyon Cove, Nasugbu Batangas July ll-l2 with Fr. Jet Villarin, the new President of Ateneo (replacing Fr. Ben Nebres) as the key speaker. He also celebrated the mass with the AGSB community.

The key topics that were covered (and they were light and few) were:

l.  The State of AGSB address by Dean Albert Buenviaje, covering the am of  July ll;

2.  Continuation of  raising the bar of assessment by Fr Go of Xavier University, where Fr. Go emphasized the following:

    l.  Assessment of the Key Values of Ateneo:  Expertise, Integrity and Service and  l0 graduation of outcome of AGSB (these are very new to the most of faculty)

    2,  The three generation of learners:

           Those belonging to:

           l.  TV age -47 up
           2.  The betamax 35-46
           3.  Net age  l4 and below

           The key point is that learning must be learner centered at Net Age (where most of the students are) and learning is always interactive rather than passive ( as with TV and betamax age learners)  (I learned from Chino, in schools abroad, rather than prohibiting computer games and FB in the classroom, FB is used to communicate with the student or discusss the strategies at farmville....)

         Then Fr Go stressed that assessment (WE MEASURE WHAT WE TREASURE)  must be aligned, authentic and achievable.  (The three As).  Of the l0 outcomes to be measured, 5 would be measureable, 5 would take some kind of work to implement..  Therefore, the outcomes must lead the way (begin with the end in mind towards assessment metrics and designing courrse and methodologies.

        Great talk.  We learn a lot from Fr. Go. We must be able to show this in our upgraded syllabus and class instruction/methodologies/strategies.
