Jon Santos Humors Agsb Faculty at Canyon Cove Conference 2011

Day 2 of the AGSB Faculty Conference

After soulful reflection led by Dr. Eufemia Yap of Health Unit (They won the contest for the AGSB got no talent contest) the conference moved on to the ligher, human side of business education.  First was the discussion of the contribution of literary arts and humanities to business: as poetry and business.  The lecture was by talk of Prof Cruz on the slide presentation of writer Isagani Cruz, her husband to the HR cluster on the same topic. There were books mentioned, as novels (Wall Street for instance or Social Network Movie (allusion to FB and Zuckerberg - my own commentary) and poetry on customer service via queing with the answering machine at most call center or even customer service center.

The big event of the morning was the appearance of Jon Santos, a famous impersonator, stand up comedian, (who can impersonate Erap, Tita Vi, Armida Siguion Reyna etc) who talk about injecting humor in instruction in the business school. He (hmm tama ba pronoun?) started out by asking Prof Jackie Chan what he ate for Breakfast, the same for Dr. Mansibang, and this blogger. Jon was observant and sharp memory and picked up previous conversation prior to his talk.  (Dr Mansibang simulated assessment and their authencity to the concerned professors.)

What I/we learned from humor:

l.  There is a taxonomy of humor and comedy (I did not know that...)
2.  Rules on comedy:

      l.  Know your audience
      2.  It is about pain and timing
      3.  Mind your acoustics
      4.  You do not have to yourself.  You can always wear a mask as you impersonate
       5.  Parts of a joke:
              l. Set up
2, Punch line ( it is a surprise; totally different from the set up like punning)

Of course that is the job/livelihood to Jon.  In our teaching job, we have a serious job to be done.  Jokes humor might liven up the class and keep everyone awake.  Most of those that I know are colored and are against the university rules.  If I joke too much....

Sample of joke that is not colored:

"God made the earth in 6 days.  After that, everything else is made in China."  (hahaha.  That is teaching China and globalization.)

Dr Mansibang and Jon discussing breakfast, and Dr. Ely's hell, or maybe
doing a show together (lately very humorous si Dr Mansibang?)

Jon running away from AGSB fans
Jon and Prof Jorge on Together (discussing mem parks?)

Talk About Research and Knowing your Audience!!!
Jon and Dr Banzon (Thin and...)
