Reasons for Being and Entrepreneur
Last week, we discussed in the class the life of John Gokongwei, a noted Filipino tycoon. Early in his life, JG was forced to be an entrepreneur because of a need to survive. Most start ups are, and as classified by GEM are need based. They start a business, or become a start up entrepreneur to bring home food to the table, to feed, clothe and shelter the family.
But later on, entrepreneurs, as they become mores successful, do it it less for a need to survive (naturally) but because it fulfills themselves; scaling up the business is a process of self discovery, and self mastery. For entrepreneurs like Antonio Tiu of Ani and others, it is to make the lives of other people better (whether it be their employees, suppliers, customers, or other stakeholders).
Being for others, improving the lives of others is being truly Christian. It is a mistake always to associate all entrepreneurs for filthy dealmakers, shenigans, and robber barons. Yes, there are many entrepreneurs out there who do not just do it for money but for others.
