Fast Vs. Slow Learner'; Exploitative vs Exploratory Learning a PACIBER LECTURE

The conference covering Transforming Organization in the Transformed Economy touched on two types of learning:  the slow and fast learner.  The fast learner tended to copy in a very competitive environment (and maybe tweak it a little for creative imitation)  For Korea, and the other emerging economies, this was strategic; it cuts development time and enables product launch faster. This is exploitative learning.

However, it is not wise to continue on imitation or creative imitation. Exploratory or slow learning is the preferred mode for discovery, invention, creativity and new product design.  (This is like Peter Senges fifth discipline)

However, and I commented during the lecture, that it is not entirely correct to focus on product and design as the only innovation possible.  FB and Iphone underwent a business model innovation because all the technology and inventions are available.  Both products were results of social innovation.

The speech was dellivered by somebody as a substitute for Prof. Toyhun Kim of Songkyungkwan University.  Looks a very academic paper and lacks relevance.  It was noticeable that while the venue was in Korea, the attendance from the host country was spotty/
