International Business and International Entrepreneurship - Faculty Development Program for PACIBER

The first day, or the preconference session was on training faculty for international business.  The first speaker was Dr.Patricia McDougall, at Kelley School of Business Indiana University. Dr. Patricia was the first to use the term international entrepreneurs (IE) (since l989) The only term used before was international business.  The evolution of her definitions:

From Journal of Business Venturing (l989)
..."the development of international new ventures or start-ups that from their inception, engage in international business, thus viewing their operating domain as international from the initial stage of their firms operation. '" (thus established firms were excluded.)

INV - International New Ventures, Global Start ups view, Infant Multinationals, Born Globals, view the world as their market from day l.

Oviatt and MacDougall (JIBS l994) INV - " a business organization tht from the inception, seeks to derive significant competitive advantage from the use of resources and sale of outputs in multiple countries'

In 2000, IE became an important domain in IB.

In 2005, Oviatt and McDougall defines IE as "The discovery, enactment, evaluation, and exploitation of opportunities- across national borders - to create future goods and services. " (Thus from a narrow defination in l989, Dr. Patricia moves to a big tent.) We are happy that Dr. the expert on IE, shared this topic/subject, and her materials. We are also lucky.

This topic should be part of my entrep subject.- IE.  IB and IE need to be added to AGSB curriculum since 98% in the case of Phil. are international, and the modern entrepreneurs must have that global mindset - and entrepreneurial at that!!!

Dr. Patricia McDougall, the international expert on IE

Dr. Manuel Serapio, who is from the Philippines, but now in in University of Colorado Denver.followed up Dr. Patricia's lecture.  He explained that his Hongkong experience in trading whet his appetite not only in doing international business, but teaching international business as well.  He gave examples on his consulting at Western Union.  Baffled by a problem on how to do more for little, he had his aha moment in raffle for Morales Pacquiao fight, instead of an endorsement, to create large awareness/communication with Mexican and Filipino consumers who used most the services of Western Union.  He discussed his experiences with Starbucks in the Philippines and call centers.

Truly a very learned and magnificent educator.  Dr Manny.  Maybe Dr. Manny becomes a returnee entrepreneur, a new phenomenon in international entrepreneurship.
